Today was our first big venture out into Bangkok. I know, we have went out before, but this time we took a taxi and it took us pretty far from where we have been staying. We got to see a different part of the city - and not necessarily the best part. We went to see the Grand Palace of the King and the Temple of the Emerald Budda, and they were both very nice and exotic. However, the parts of town we drove through to get there definitely made me long for home. I felt really bad for the people of Thailand. Most of them rely on tourists to make their money - whether it be driving for them or selling goods. We bought a few things today, and the people were asking 500 Baht - which seems like a lot, but really is only about $15.00 American dollars. But before I could say anything, she changed her price to 200 Baht, less than 10.00. We have been told that they like to barter, but I felt like we were taking advantage of them. We had an English speaking tour guide of the grounds of the temple and the palace. She was very good and told us a lot about Thai history. We had to take our shoes off before going into the temple, and no cameras were allowed.
Days like today make us appreciate our lives at home. We feel very fortunate to live where we do, and we are glad that Abe will have a chance at a better life by coming to live with us soon.
P.S. I have been trying to load pictures, but the site isn't cooperating. I will try again later before we go to bed.
