We are back from our little exploration of downtown Bangkok. We were out for about 4 or 5 hours. That short amount of time should confirm to you that it is VERY HOT here - about 98 degrees! We found a shopping district that reminds me of the Straw Market in the Bahamas, and a "food court" type area to eat. Since we slept through breakfast and lunch, we were very hungry. Neither of us felt brave enough to try some Thai food, so we ate PIZZA! I put a picture up of the restaurant. The pizza was good, and we knew not to ask for water (it may be tap) so we both asked for a coke. The cokes were in glass bottles, and they poured them for us - no ice. Thank goodness the restaurant was air-conditioned. We saw dogs and cats everywhere... keep in mind this is a downtown district - it was strage to see them running about. The two cats we saw looked different than cats I have ever seen before - I wonder if they all look like that here? The way people drive here is insane! Drivers do not stop for pedestrians - so you have to literally walk out in front of people to get them to stop! Also, we saw a lot of Tuk Tuk's (looks like a horse-drawn carriage without the horse), a ton of mopeds, motorcycles, and bikes. This seems to be the chosen mode of transportation for people, although we have seen a lot of taxis and cars - mostly Toyotas. We found the 7 Eleven store and stocked up on bottled water and snacks... price tag 183.00 Baht (which is about $6.00). There was a lady at a Thai food restaurant in Knoxville that told us that Bangkok was not even as big as Knoxville - she was out of her mind! This city is huge, more like Atlanta or bigger!
We are trying to go to bed at a normal time for here. Hopefully our bodies will get used to the time here (probably just in time to leave!).
Good night everyone - love to all!
Amy & Matt
